Eight step disinfection method for pig farms

Eight step disinfection method for pig farms

Mar 22,2023
  • The disinfection process during the empty pig shed is the core of the daily disinfection work of the pig farm, which can be summarized as an eight step disinfection method, namely, "one cleaning, two washing, three soaking, four removing residues, five fog, six white, seven fumigation, and eight empty stalls.".
  • "First cleaning: refers to thoroughly cleaning various organic pollutants, especially some sanitary dead spots, and even requiring the removal of equipment and the removal of waste panels. It also includes spider webs and dust on roofs and windows.".
  • Second washing: wash and brush the floor, walls, and non removable equipment of the shed.
  • Three Soaks: Soak some floors in disinfectant for at least 24 hours, which is related to whether the floor soaking disinfection measures were considered in the design of the pig house building. Many pig farms have no way to do this procedure, such as excessive ground slopes and inability to store water. There are also removable equipment such as delivery bed fastening plates, nursery bed fastening plates, feeding slots, piglet insulation room pads, sacks, etc., which must also be soaked in disinfectant for more than 24 hours.
  • Four residues removal: Wash the residual disinfectant after the above three steps of disinfection measures with a large amount of clean water.
  • Five Mists: Based on the first four measures, comprehensive atomization disinfection should be carried out, especially for the air disinfection on the roof and inside the building. The atomization effect should be good, so that the disinfectant can stay in the air for as long as possible.
  • "Six Whites: Using foaming agents to" whiten "the walls, floors, feed tanks, etc. that pigs come into contact with is to kill any harmful bacteria, viruses, or parasites that may remain.".
  • Seven fumigation: Close the doors and windows and fumigate with formalin or other highly effective disinfectants.
  • Eight empty fences (sheds): At least one week of empty sheds. The significance of empty columns is enormous, but few pig farming enterprises can do so now, mainly due to investment costs.

  • Disinfection is toxic and has side effects. Do not blindly disinfect, let alone over disinfect. It is impossible, unrealistic, and even unnecessary to completely eliminate pathogenic microorganisms. How to establish a healthy micro ecological balance system in your pig farm is important.
